Women@Turn kicked off its 2016 event series with a fireside chat by Turn’s Maureen Little, with renowned CMO, ad industry veteran and Turn board member Becky Saeger. Becky’s words echoed so much of what this group is about.
Go for it
Turn CEO Bruce Falck said “go for it,” Becky repeated the phrase and it became the mantra of the session. We all play a role in encouraging women and men alike to go for it, whatever that “it” is. No one is going to place you into your dream job, as much as you may feel you have earned it: you need to ask for and go for it.
It’s not personal, it’s business
Becky advised us not to take anything too personally. Most of the time, when your manager gets upset or has a bad day, it’s not about you. Personal and work stress can cause people to act outside of their norm. When this happens, remember that it’s likely not about you, but rather the many external factors that can control our emotions and behaviour.
Don’t wear your gender on your sleeve
Saeger warned against anticipating a disadvantage due to gender, but there’s a need to be mindful of gender equality and opportunities. And this is for all, not just women. But it’s also on the individual to dictate their career course and ask for what they want, and create their own opportunities.
Woman@Turn is grateful that Becky Saeger kicked off our 2016 programming. She brought a thoughtful dialogue around so many of the issues we all face in the workplace. It was also great to hear about her perspective about our brand as a board member. It’s not often the whole company gets access to a member of the board to learn about how they think about our business and what our future track will be.
